New Report Highlights Exit Strategies for Women Business Owners

A new report released by the Center for Women’s Business Research highlights the importance of women entrepreneurs planning to exit their companies. The report, Exiting Your Business: Serendipity or Strategy, examines steps women should take and missteps they should avoid when preparing both professionally and personally for exiting their businesses, whether by selling, handing down to a child, or closing.

The study, which analyzes nine in-depth interviews with women whose businesses generated $4 million or more annually in revenues, is a companion to the quantitative report released in 2006, Exit Strategies of Women and Men Business Owners. The interviews reinforce the findings of the previous study and detail how these women handled exiting their businesses and their ensuing life choices.

Women Want Shorter Work Days, More Free Time

Results are in and the U.S. Department of Labor's review is not looking too good for women.  One in five women only take a vacation once every six years, which is predicted to contribute to depression.  In addition to promoting good mental health, women who take frequent vacations reported better sleep, better marriages, and were less likely to be tense or depressed.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Monthly Labor Review notes that women would prefer shorter workdays, even if it meant less pay.  Almost six percent of men would like to work fewer hours, and 10.1 percent of women would prefer the shorter workdays.  Twice as many women feel they would like less time in the office, which may be due to women's disproportionate share of household responsibilities.  Other researches attributed the gap to a desire among women to spend more time with their children.

Interestingly, married women with children were twice as likely to feel rushed than single women without children. But men who are married with children do not feel any more rushed than single men without children. For more information visit www.dol.gov.

Council Releases New Study on Women-Owned and Women-Led Firms

A new two-part study by the National Women's Business Council examining the economic impact of both women-owned and women-led firms reveals that the contributions of women business owners have long gone understated. For the first time, these reports include data on women-led firms, where a woman owns a percentage of the business at least equal to any other owner and where a woman or women managed day-to-day operations.

According to the studies, there were over 1 million women-led businesses generating in excess of $300 billion in revenues in 2002, or about 3% of the U.S. GDP. These firms employed 2.5 million employees and paid nearly $56 billion in payroll. Combined, women-owned and women-led (WOWL) firms totaled over 7.5 million in 2002, employed 9.6 million people and generated nearly $1.2 trillion in revenues, or about 12% of the U.S. GDP.

Both reports may be found on the NWBC's web site, www.nwbc.gov.

Success Stories of Our Certified WBEs

 Meet Pamela Hall, CEO/CFO

Hall Enterprises, Inc. DBA, Logistics Planning Services

After working for 15 years at 3M, Pamela Hall was ready to do something on her own. When her husband requested her help with his company in 1993, it was a natural transition for her.  Her experience in the areas of HR management, logistics/warehousing management, and communications was a perfect fit to get a family business flourishing and heading in the right direction.

Hall Enterprises, DBA Logistics Planning Services, is located in Mendota Heights, Minnesota, and has clients located in 48 states, Canada and China.  Hall is the majority owner and her husband is the minority owner.  Logistics Planning Services has been at the forefront of its industry, providing money-saving shipping options for companies across the country.

LPS developed its first application software called KeyRater to help manage shipping costs for the electric utility industry.  While distribution of KeyRater on diskettes was initially effective, LPS soon realized that they would have to redistribute the software diskettes every time rates changed or every time a carrier’s service changed.  This practice became overwhelming and LPS therefore needed to develop a better way to manage the software updates.

In 1998, LPS enhanced KeyRater so it could be interfaced to and accessed by clients on the Internet, making it one of the first logistics companies that provided online applications.  In 2001, LPS next refined its business model moving from a carrier-funded program to a shipper-funded service.  Through all of these improvements, LPS has been committed to bringing the lowest possible shipping prices and SOX compliant cost controls to its clients.

LPS was NWBOC certified on September 4th, 2007 but already they are seeing the benefits as a diversity/woman-owned company.  Hall says, “I am delighted to have achieved certification as a woman-owned, woman controlled business and look forward to the value add this certification can provide to our customers like the Electric Utility Industry and the Automotive Industry where diversity spend is critical.”

Through the years, Hall and LPS have hired many young people who began as interns in the company.  90% of the interns they hired have remained with LPS and are now full-time employees.  Hall’s two sons are also actively involved in the business. “The future of LPS lies in the hands of these young people to carry it on and keep it vibrant and strong”, says Hall.  “I have worked hard to build a culture of hard working people who work together as a team and equally contribute in making each day a success. There will come a time when I will want to retire and that’s why I am so determined to lay the building blocks that will ensure that this company will be successful for many years to come.”
